Get the scope clear first
Many difficult submissions begin with an unclear scope. List the organisation, locations, people, devices, networks and cloud services involved. Record any legitimate exclusions and make sure the technical reality matches the written boundary.
Seven useful readiness checks
Before answering the questionnaire, check the controls that most often create practical work.
- Supported operating systems and applications
- Security updates applied within the required timescale
- Internet-facing firewalls and secure configuration
- Separate user and administrator accounts
- Multi-factor authentication for cloud services
- Malware protection and application controls
- A complete list of laptops, desktops, mobiles, servers and cloud services
Answer for the real environment
The assessment is not a policy-writing exercise. Answers should describe controls that are actually in place and can be evidenced. If the answer exposes a gap, fix the gap rather than polishing the wording.
Prepare Plus at the same time
If Cyber Essentials Plus is likely to follow, build testing readiness into the remediation work. Device sampling, patch evidence, malware protection, cloud configuration and user access are much easier to address methodically than in the final week.
Wrexham Tech Support can help with gap analysis, technical remediation and Cyber Essentials Plus preparation; certification itself is issued through an accredited certification body.
